Benefits have just released their new single and video, "Land of the Tyrants," available through Invada Records as of September 17, 2024. This track marks the band's first taste of upcoming material since their album "Nails," which was named Louder Than War's Number 1 Album of the Year in 2023.
The track sees a shift in the band's sonic direction, moving towards a more electronic sound as noted by band member Kingsley Hall. He explained that while they initially contemplated sticking to their raw, shouty noise rock roots, they found themselves inspired to explore new territories sonically. The track embodies a darker, more cinematic feel with heavy basslines and 90s dance influences, alongside production from James Welsh, an established electronic musician and a friend of the band.
Guest vocals on the track are provided by Zera Tnin, the frontperson of queer-pop electro duo Arch Femmesis, whose unique vocal styles have been highlighted as a crucial element. The accompanying music video is directed by John Kirkbride and is reportedly inspired by the 1980 film "The Long Good Friday." The video captures the intensity of the song and evokes classic British cinema aesthetic, filmed entirely from inside a car.
Benefits are set to take their new material on the road later this autumn, following a support gig with Arab Strap at Glasgow's Barrowland Ballroom on September 21. The band's tour will feature dates across the UK and into Europe, including appearances at Left Of The Dial and Iceland Airwaves. Check their official website for details and ticket information.
