Tulsa-based singer-songwriter Casii Stephan is gearing up for the release of her new EP, Relationship Status, which drops on September 20, 2024. Earlier this year, she gained significant attention on TikTok with her soulful rendition of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs," a cover that transforms the heavy metal classic into a poignant piano ballad. Speaking about her approach, Stephan stated, "I wanted to encapsulate the feeling of women left behind praying for mercy or vengeance." Among her original tracks on the EP is "Average Man," which addresses themes of infidelity and betrayal, inspired by the struggles faced by female artists, notably Shania Twain, highlighted in the documentary Shania Twain: Not Just A Girl. The song reflects on personal experiences and societal issues, as Stephan noted, "It pissed me off even more when I learned how common it is for women diagnosed with cancer to lose the support of their partners." Stephan's creative process is evident throughout the EP, showcasing a range of emotions from the anger expressed in "Average Man" to the lighter vibes of "Wine & Gold." She stated, "The four songs told a story of going through relationship statuses and finally starting over again." For the production, she teamed up with producer Ben Tanner in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, aiming for a deep, soulful sound that matches her artistic vision. This collaboration marks a significant milestone for Stephan, who signed with indie label Shamus Records, expressing gratitude for their support. The final track, "Without A Box," encourages listeners to embrace their individuality and break free from societal expectations regarding relationships. Stephan is also set to take her music overseas, performing at the folk music conference Your Roots Are Showing in Ireland next January. The Relationship Status EP will be accessible on all major streaming platforms.
