Dutch distributor and vinyl producer Artone has recently announced its acquisition of the UK-based direct-to-consumer (D2C) retailer and distributor Townsend Music. This strategic move enhances Artone's capacity to provide a comprehensive offering for physical products within the music industry. Townsend Music is set to join other notable entities under the Artone umbrella, which includes Bertus Distribution and Record Industry, as well as reputable labels such as V2, Music On Vinyl, and Music On CD.
CEO Jan Willem Kaasschieter emphasized the benefits this acquisition brings, commenting that it fortifies their position as a global leader in physical music distribution. He noted the new opportunities that this merger presents and expressed enthusiasm about the potential to expand their innovative solutions tailored for the music sector.
Townsend Music has been recognized for its successful model aimed at servicing white-label artist-led online shops and independent music retailers. With over 1,000 artists using their services, including renowned names like Kylie Minogue and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, the company has consistently achieved top placings in sales.
The acquisition aligns with Townsend's goals of quick expansion across Europe, aided by Artone's established distribution and manufacturing facilities. Townsend's founder, Steve Bamber, also shared optimism about integrating their services with Artone to deliver enhanced D2C offerings to artists and fans alike. As physical music sales show signs of growth, evident in recent figures from the UK's ERA and the RIAA, this acquisition could contribute to a pivotal reshaping of the physical music market.
