Music industry hard drives from the 1990s are dying, archivists warn

Archivists have warned that hard drives used by the music industry in the 1990s are becoming unreadable, indicating that valuable historic sessions are at risk of being lost. A survey by Iron Mountain Media highlighted that around one-fifth of its hard drive inventory is now unreadable, showing that the shift from magnetic tape to hard drive storage may not have provided the longevity expected for preserving music files. Notably, instances of lost studio masters have been increasing following previous incidents where many artists, including Beck, lost their work due to a warehouse fire.
