Soundscapes and Substances: Drug Use in the Music Industry

The relationship between drug use and the music industry has deep historical roots, starting from jazz clubs in the 1930s to the explosion of drug culture among artists in the 1960s, 70s, and beyond. Drugs provided an escape for musicians amidst societal turmoil, evident in genres like psychedelic rock and punk. Influential artists like Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles openly engaged with drug use, which was both a coping mechanism and a form of artistic expression. However, the rise of heroin and other hard drugs in the rock scene has also led to tragic losses, highlighting the need for better support systems in the industry. Despite drug use being romanticized, there is a growing need for awareness and rehabilitation efforts to tackle addiction in music.
