The Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) has awarded its esteemed Gold Medal to esteemed composer Arvo Pärt, acknowledging his remarkable contributions to the musical landscape. On September 12, RPS chair Angela Dixon and chief executive James Murphy made a visit to Estonia for the award presentation, which took place at the newly established Arvo Pärt Centre.

This notable occasion aligns with the concurrent honor being presented to composer Thomas Adès, who will also receive the same accolade this month. Michael Pärt, the composer’s son, conveyed his appreciation for this recognition, articulating, "Music is not just about sound, but a deep connection between the past and the present, between cultures and traditions, and between individual experiences." He highlighted how his father’s compositions seamlessly weave early musical traditions with modern styles, showcasing an artistic evolution that resonates deeply.

Renowned for his signature tintinnabuli technique, Arvo Pärt's creative journey is often described as a blend of spiritual and artistic discovery. His affinity for English choral music has had a significant impact on his body of work, with noted collaborations with esteemed ensembles such as The Hilliard Ensemble and its founder, Paul Hillier.

The RPS Gold Medal, which has a rich history dating back to its inception in 1871, has honored numerous transformative musicians throughout history, including the illustrious Brahms, Stravinsky, and Britten, alongside contemporary legends such as Jessye Norman and John Williams. The medal is adorned with Beethoven’s likeness, celebrating his link to the Society that commissioned his acclaimed Ninth Symphony.
