Bon Iver is set to make a notable return with the release of its new single, "S P E Y S I D E," scheduled for this Friday, September 20, 2024. This marks the first new music from the band in four years. Frontman Justin Vernon has performed the track live six times since its debut in 2022, showcasing the emotional weight of the piece which he described as tied to feelings of guilt.

The studio version of "S P E Y S I D E" features Vernon as the lead on guitar and vocals alongside long-time collaborator Rob Moose on viola. The production of the track is credited to Vernon and Jim-E Stack. Alongside the single, an accompanying music video directed by Erinn Springer will also be released.

In a previous performance, Vernon reflected on the personal nature of the song, saying, "I was feeling a lot of guilt, which is an important emotion to have... the day I wrote it, I got a little drunk on rum and sent it to a couple of friends. I'm thankful to have a friend to send a song to."

The lyrics convey a deep sense of introspection, highlighting Vernon's connection to the themes of regret and longing. "I know now that I can't make good / but how I wish I could go back / and put me where you stood," he sings.

"S P E Y S I D E" is anticipated to be part of a forthcoming Bon Iver album under Jagjaguwar Records, continuing the band's legacy following the 2019 release of "I, I," which achieved significant chart success, including a No. 1 debut on Billboard’s Folk and Independent Albums charts.

In addition to his solo work, Vernon has collaborated with various artists over the years, including Big Red Machine, The National, and Zach Bryan, further expanding his influence in the music industry. For more on Bon Iver's upcoming music, you can visit SPIN.
