Derek Boshier, the British pop art pioneer known for his influential collaborations with notable musicians like David Bowie and The Clash, has passed away at the age of 87. His death occurred peacefully at his home in Los Angeles, as confirmed by his publicist, Daniel Bee, on September 6, 2024.

Boshier, who hailed from Portsmouth, made significant contributions to the pop art movement that emerged in London and later crossed the Atlantic to the United States. His artistic legacy is showcased in many of the world's top museums and galleries, according to Bee, who remarked on the depth of Boshier's cultural commentary throughout his 60-year career.

The artist was educated at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London from 1959 to 1962, where he studied alongside leading pop artists, including Allen Jones, Peter Phillips, and David Hockney. Following his studies, Boshier taught at the Central School of Art and Design, where Joe Strummer, future frontman of The Clash, was among his pupils. His connection to the renowned punk band deepened when he designed their second songbook, which featured his own drawings and paintings.

In 1979, Boshier's exhibition titled 'Lives' highlighted diverse artistic explorations of people's lives, featuring prominent artists such as R.B. Kitaj and Bruce McLean. This exhibition caught the attention of David Bowie, leading to a lasting friendship spanning over three decades between the two artists. Boshier notably contributed artwork to Bowie's thirteenth studio album, 'Lodger', released in the same year.

Bowie's appreciation for Boshier's work was evident even in his final days; he sent a handwritten note to the artist prior to his death in 2016, praising Boshier's influential art book and recognizing the enduring impact of his artwork across generations.

Derek Boshier's contributions to both the art world and the music industry have left an indelible mark and his presence will be greatly missed, as conveyed by those who knew him and appreciated his work.
