Songwriter and actor J.D. Souther has passed away at the age of 78. His death occurred peacefully at home in New Mexico, just days before he was scheduled to embark on a U.S. tour with singer-songwriter Karla Bonoff. The Eagles, with whom Souther wrote several renowned tracks, shared a heartfelt tribute reflecting on his contributions and character. The band expressed their loss, stating, "We have lost a brother, a friend, and a brilliant collaborator. J.D. Souther was smart, talented, well-read, and possessed a wicked sense of humor. He loved a good meal, a good movie, a good Martini, and had a deep affection for dogs." Souther was recognized as a key figure in the Southern California sound of the 1970s, co-writing some of the Eagles' biggest hits, including "The Best of My Love," "New Kid in Town," and "Heartache Tonight." He also collaborated on many notable songs for Don Henley, contributing to tracks like "The Heart of the Matter" and "Talking to the Moon." Born in Detroit and raised in the Texas Panhandle, Souther was influenced by a rich spectrum of American music, including country, jazz, and classical genres. His musical professionalism extended beyond the Eagles, working with artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, and Roy Orbison. In addition to his songwriting prowess, Souther ventured into acting, notably playing John Dunaway in the series "Thirtysomething" and a recurring role as record producer Watty Wyatt in "Nashville." His legacy in music and television endures as he is remembered fondly by fans and collaborators alike. The Eagles concluded their tribute with words of condolence to Souther's family, friends, and fans, highlighting the profound impact he had on a generation of musicians. "Adios, old friend. Travel well," they expressed. For more on J.D. Souther's life and contributions, visit Loudersound.
