Jack Antonoff has issued a clarification regarding a misunderstanding stemming from the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), which took place on September 11. The ceremony honored various artists, with Katy Perry receiving the distinguished Video Vanguard Award. During the event, Perry mesmerized the audience with a medley of her greatest hits alongside new material from her forthcoming album, '143', set to be released on September 20, 2024. A central point of controversy arose as Antonoff was seen alongside Taylor Swift and actress Margaret Qualley, seemingly inserting what many viewers presumed to be AirPods into his ears. This moment ignited considerable speculation and backlash on social media platforms, with fans expressing concerns over Antonoff's actions. The situation escalated further following a viral Twitter post that highlighted the scrutiny Antonoff faced. In response to the backlash, Antonoff clarified that what he inserted into his ears were not AirPods, but rather blue 'Hero' brand earplugs designed specifically for hearing protection. He revealed that it was 'humiliating to admit' his need for earplugs in loud settings, asserting that discussions around hearing protection should be normalized, especially within his family context. This incident follows a whirlwind summer for Antonoff, marked by a surprise appearance at the finale of Taylor Swift's 'Eras' tour in London and a collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter at the Grammy Museum. Meanwhile, during her acceptance speech for the Video Vanguard Award, Katy Perry took a moment to express her gratitude to her loyal fans, particularly those within the LGBTQ+ community.
