Mike Joyce, the drummer of iconic UK band The Smiths, has launched a crowdfunding campaign aimed at creating a permanent mural of the band's late bassist, Andy Rourke, in Manchester. The initiative started on September 15, 2024, via the Crowdfunder platform, and it also seeks to raise funds for the charity Pancreatic Cancer Action, following Rourke's death from pancreatic cancer last year at the age of 59.

The campaign has a target of £15,500, which will be allocated for various expenses tied to the mural's creation, including artist fees, materials, permits, and more. So far, the project has raised over £3,541 and the mural is expected to be unveiled in November 2024. Contributions will also fund prints of the mural that will be signed by Joyce and the mural artist, rewarding those who support this tribute to Rourke's musical legacy.

Joyce expressed hope that this effort would not only serve as a lasting memorial for Rourke but also promote awareness regarding pancreatic cancer. He stated, “Thanks to this Crowdfunder, fans of Andy and The Smiths can contribute to a permanent memorial in his and the band's hometown of Manchester, but also increase awareness of this debilitating disease.”

In related news, Morrissey, the former frontman of The Smiths, recently hinted at an approved 'Greatest Hits' album from Warner Records that has been delayed due to Johnny Marr's opposition. Morrissey also claimed that Marr turned down a lucrative offer for a band reunion tour slated for 2025, reiterating his belief in the enduring popularity of The Smiths despite these challenges.
