Music Modernization Act on Copyright Laws

The Music Modernization Act (MMA) is a 2018 law aimed at updating U.S. copyright laws to better support musicians in the digital age. It establishes a new blanket licensing system to ease the process for digital music providers while ensuring fair compensation for songwriters, musicians, and producers. The MMA also extends federal copyright protections to sound recordings made before 1972, recognizing the contributions of music producers and engineers for the first time in copyright law. This act addresses issues of royalty collection and distribution through the Mechanical Licensing Collective, creating a centralized process that aims to improve efficiency and transparency in the music industry. While the MMA has received positive reactions, challenges related to implementation and accuracy of royalty distribution remain.
