Paris-based painter Sophie Dherbecourt spoke candidly about her artistic practice in a recent interview, coinciding with the release of her friend and collaborator, Besau's, debut A COLORS SHOW. The conversation delves into Dherbecourt's approach to depicting the female figure and her exploration of nudity within her artwork.

Dherbecourt challenges the conventional portrayal of women in art, aiming to create a new definition of femininity. "I find it difficult when my work is described as feminine... I would say my work is more sensual than feminine," she asserted, emphasizing her desire to mix and match masculinity and femininity.

Her work often includes figures in surreal scenes, exploring themes of vulnerability and emotional strength, particularly as they relate to the female experience. Dherbecourt's recent collection, showcased in her solo exhibition "Pathos of Things," reflects her personal journey through depression, illustrating various emotional stages through eleven paintings.

A remarkable aspect of this exhibition was Dherbecourt's collaboration with multidisciplinary artists, including musician Besau. The two met in 2022 and quickly discovered their mutual appreciation for each other's crafts. Besau's interpretation of Dherbecourt's painting involved blending classic jazz with contemporary electronic sounds, creating a sonic narrative that encapsulated the painting's dream-like nature.

In the future, Dherbecourt plans to explore more collaborations and is open to taking on new opportunities within the art world, including residencies and partnerships with brands. In her words, "I really just want to keep evolving and creating for the right reasons."
