South Carolina songwriter Taylor McCall has unveiled his latest project, The Porch Sessions EP, which dropped on August 23 through Black Powder Soul Records. This EP consists of four intimate tracks pulled from his well-received 2024 album, Mellow War. McCall, who collaborated with Sean McConnell for these sessions, aims to convey a sense of authenticity and closeness, stating, "I wanted to break down the artificial veils of the studio and bring the listeners onto my porch."
In conjunction with the EP's release, McCall premiered a new music video for the track "Rolling Stoned Again," showcasing behind-the-scenes footage that offers a glimpse into the porch production process. Having recently performed at the Cambridge Folk Festival in the UK, McCall is preparing for his first headlining US tour, which will commence in September.
Mellow War, McCall's third studio album, has been characterized as an emotive blend of influences ranging from Lou Reed to Sam Cooke and Steve Earle. Notably, McCall dedicated this album to his late grandfather, with the album cover featuring a photo taken during his time in Vietnam. He reflects on his music as letters "to home that I imagined he might have sent," underlining its significance beyond mere entertainment.
Born in Greenville, South Carolina, McCall's inspiration stems from his experiences in nature alongside traditional family values, making each of his songs imbued with personal history.
