The music world is mourning the loss of George Bruno Money, known as Zoot Money, who passed away at the age of 82 on September 8, 2024. The news was confirmed via a post on his official Facebook page, which read, "Ladies and gentlemen Zoot Money has left the building. May the circle be unbroken. George Bruno Money 17th July 1942 - 8th September 2024."

Born in Bournemouth, Money developed a passion for music early on, particularly for Black American rhythm and blues. His stage name was inspired by the jazz saxophonist Zoot Sims. Throughout the 1960s, he became a significant figure in the London and south coast club scene, leading Zoot Money's Big Roll Band, a group that resonated with the emerging Mod culture. Notably, their rendition of 'Big Time Operator' remains one of the band's most recognized tracks.

The band's line-up served as a training ground for many UK R&B musicians and included notable members like Andy Summers, who later gained fame as a member of The Police. The Big Roll Band transitioned into Dantalian's Chariot during the rise of the counterculture movement, gaining acclaim for their psychedelic sounds. Despite a standout track, 'Madman Running Through The Fields,' broader recognition eluded the group.

Post-Big Roll Band, Money remained active in the music scene as a sought-after session musician and devoted performer. Among his diverse contributions, he supervised the soundtrack for the beloved cult TV series Tutti Frutti, showcasing his versatile talent.

As tributes continue to flow, Zoot Money's contribution to the UK R&B landscape remains indelible, marking him as a pioneering figure whose influence shaped the genre. Read more here.
