On August 29, 2024, Australian producer Maxwell Byrne, better known by his alias 1tbsp, released his latest album, Megacity1000. This ambitious concept album eschews traditional boundaries within electronic music, intertwining house, UK garage, and experimental elements. Byrne utilized a cardboard city his girlfriend and he built during the summer as a backdrop for the album’s visual narrative. Influenced by cinematic works such as Playtime by Jacques Tati (1967) and Metropolis by Fritz Lang (1928), as well as ongoing urban developments like The Line in Saudi Arabia, the album presents a deep exploration of metropolitan life.
Byrne noted, "DJing & dance music can exist as an escape from reality, but it was interesting to bring these concepts into my music." Tracks such as "Starchitect" and "The City Never Felt So Good" highlight not only infectious beats but also a rich sonic landscape, making them suitable for both casual listening and dance floors. Additionally, his collaboration with Cherry Chola on the track "Limosina" adds further depth to the album.
Beyond its sound, Megacity1000 reflects on urbanization's societal implications, illustrating a rise and decline narrative within a fictional city. This unique approach positions 1tbsp as an innovative voice in contemporary electronic music. You can find more details and connect with 1tbsp through House Music With Love.
