Alice Costelloe is set to make a return to the music scene with an upcoming EP slated for release later this year. Known previously for her work as a founding member of Big Deal, Costelloe has spent over a decade crafting her sound through numerous solo projects and collaborations. Now signed to Moshi Moshi, she has teamed up with producer Mike Lindsay, recognized for his notable work with Laura Marling and Jon Hopkins, to bring her new musical vision to life.
The first single from the EP, titled 'When It's The Time,' has been released and explores the themes surrounding the end of relationships and life itself. In a statement, Costelloe shared insight into her creative process, revealing that the song initially emerged from a personal experience of moving on from a romantic relationship. However, the influence of an intense religious organization near her home shifted the song’s narrative towards a broader contemplation of endings, both personal and universal.
Costelloe stated, "I started writing 'When It's The Time' about moving on, but the preachers that kept knocking at the door took the song in a different direction...this became a sort of theme of the EP." The production, crafted at Lindsay’s studio in Margate, called MESS, has been described as combining classic sounds with modern electronic influences, showcasing a new experimental flair in Costelloe's music.
Costelloe expressed excitement about the unique instruments used in the studio, noting that this recording marked the first time she played a real organ. 'When It's The Time' is available now to stream, offering a glimpse into the stylistic evolution of Alice Costelloe's music.
