The renowned Berlin nightclub Watergate has announced that it will permanently close its doors at the end of 2024, according to information confirmed by Resident Advisor. Co-founder Ulrich Wombacher attributed the closure to profound financial stresses, highlighting escalating rent costs, inflation, and the energy crisis as primary concerns.

Wombacher expressed that the financial burden of maintaining the venue has become unsustainable, stating, "Continuing blindly without sense or reason and risking an uncontrolled financial decline is out of the question for us."

Established in 2002 in Lohmleninsel, Berlin, Watergate has long been a pivotal destination for electronic music enthusiasts. Over its 22 years of operation, the club has hosted various prominent artists, including legends such as Carl Cox and Charlotte de Witte, contributing significantly to the global dance music scene.

In a broader context, Wombacher also noted an observable shift in trends, as larger events and festivals gain more popularity. This change appears to signal a shift away from intimate venues designed to foster close community experiences.

The announcement of Watergate's closure follows a similar fate for another Berlin venue, Renate, which also cited financial strain, raising questions regarding the future of nightlife in the city. Read more on Mixmag.
