Chow Lee has emerged as a key figure in the evolution of New York’s hip-hop scene, particularly within the genre of sexy drill. In a recent interview with The FADER, the NYC rapper reflected on his journey and the release of his latest album, Sex Drive, showcasing his growth as an artist and the influence he has had on the genre.

Two years ago, Chow Lee partnered with Cash Cobain to create the impactful mixtape 2 SLIZZY 2 SEXY. The project introduced a provocative twist on drill music, a style characterized by its catchy samples and unapologetic lyrics. Speaking on this evolution, Chow said, "At first they wasn't jacking us. Now everybody wants to sexy drill."

The genre has since attracted a range of artists including Bktherula, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Drake, and many more. In his latest project, Sex Drive, Chow Lee not only deepens his lyrical content but also diversifies his sound, integrating moody melodies and soothing rhythms.

Addressing the themes in Sex Drive, Chow commented, "We still talking about women, we catering to the girls and, you know, still talking about sleazy shit, derogatory shit... but it feels more risqué than obscene." The album exemplifies his playful self-awareness, particularly on tracks like "ms. beautiful V" and "jatty," where he juxtaposes sexual themes with romantic undertones.

In discussing his creative process, Chow explained that the album was stitched together gradually as he realized the potential for a cohesive project during recording sessions. Highlighting the involvement of multiple producers, Chow mentioned his approach to sampling, ensuring each sound is original and authentically integrated into his music.

Collaborations with artists like Flo Milli and Anycia add rich layers to the album, reinforcing its multifaceted exploration of relationships and dating. Chow also reflected on his experience with controversial lyrics, admitting to having faced backlash for his songwriting that some perceive as fiction yet others take literally.

As the conversation shifted towards the future of sexy drill, Chow expressed his desire for the genre to flourish, remarking, "I want everybody to keep making this shit. We're not gatekeeping this shit."

With Sex Drive, Chow Lee not only solidifies his position in the contemporary rap scene but also paves the way for the continued evolution of sexy drill. To explore more about his work and the genre, visit The FADER at The FADER.
