David Ellefson, the former bassist of the thrash metal band Megadeth, has not ruled out the possibility of returning to the band he co-founded with Dave Mustaine in 1984. In an interview with El Planeta Del Rock (as reported by Blabbermouth), Ellefson remarked, "It's never a closed chapter. Look, I helped start the band. I was there from the beginning. My heart and soul was in it."

Ellefson was dismissed from Megadeth in 2021 following a scandal involving leaked explicit video footage of him and a fan. Despite the controversy, he emphasized that his departure does not erase his 37-year legacy with the group. He stated, "You can't just take that piece of your life and just pull it out and stick it on the shelf. It's part of me. I'm always part of that."

While he acknowledges that Megadeth is currently operating without him, he adds, "Maybe another time" when discussing a potential return. Earlier this year in an exclusive interview with Metal Hammer, Ellefson opened up about the duality of the circumstances surrounding his dismissal, saying, "When you bare it all, you've got nothing to hide."

Since leaving Megadeth, Ellefson has been actively performing with several projects, including the death metal band Dieth, hard rockers The Lucid, and the thrash group Kings Of Thrash, as well as continuing his involvement with metal supergroup Metal Allegiance.
