Doug Emhoff, the husband of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, showcased his latest vinyl purchase on September 11, 2024, during a surprise visit to Latchkey record store in Philadelphia. Accompanied by California Governor Gavin Newsom, Emhoff highlighted LPs from iconic bands The Stone Roses and New Order, stating, "These are two records that I still listen to, to this day."
In a video shared on Emhoff's social media, he revealed that he bought The Stone Roses' self-titled debut from 1989 and New Order's 1986 album 'Brotherhood'. Newsom mentioned his own choices of Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue' and Jackson Browne's 'Hold Out', adding, "There's only one late, great Miles Davis."
The visit came just before a presidential debate between Harris and Donald Trump, illustrating an intersection of music and politics. Latchkey’s owner, Marc Faletti, recounted their engaging discussions about music genres, including a playful debate on whether terms like "dad rock" or "yacht rock" are offensive.
Emhoff’s appreciation for vinyl aligns with his wife’s musical interests; Kamala Harris also displayed her vinyl collection in May, featuring prominent figures like Charlie Mingus and Ella Fitzgerald.
Additionally, New Order announced a deluxe reissue of 'Brotherhood', set to drop on November 22, 2024. This includes a vinyl LP and CDs featuring remastered tracks, unreleased demos, and DVD footage from historical performances.
