Psychedelic folk duo Elkhorn has released their latest album, The Red Valley, under VHF Records, marking their third album in a single year. Following the release of Other Worlds in July and the eclectic Lagniappe Sessions from last autumn, this new album showcases an evolution in their sound. Elkhorn, consisting of members Jesse Sheppard and Drew Gardner, has always been known for their improvisational skills and deep musical intuition, but The Red Valley presents a more layered, orchestral approach that distinguishes it from their past work.

The album opens with ‘Crystal Hummingbird’, blending texture with power. This track features chiming acoustic notes complemented by fuzzed guitars and rhythmic layers, setting the stage for an album that explores both intensity and delicate intimacy. The follow-up track, ‘Gray Salt Trail’, maintains this intensity, weaving vibraphone melodies through raga-inspired acoustic frameworks.

With the inclusion of instruments such as the zither, vibraphone, and contributions from Jesse Sparhawk on lever harp, Elkhorn leans into a complex sound that evokes symphonic elements. ‘Black Wind of Kayenta’ highlights their ability to merge visceral noise with melodic structures, showcasing their intricate craftsmanship across the album’s eight tracks.

Other noteworthy tracks include ‘Road to Chaco Canyon’, which oscillates between tightly controlled performances and moments of expansive musical freedom, and ‘Inside Spider Rock’, a more tranquil piece that melds silvery harp notes with expansive guitar work. The album concludes with ‘Jackrabbit Hops’, featuring a mesmerizing slide guitar complemented by warm melodies and vibrant percussion.

The Red Valley is available for download and on a limited edition pink vinyl through VHF Records, accessible at VHF Records Bandcamp. As Elkhorn continues to explore new sonic territories, this album further cements their status within the contemporary psychedelic scene.
