Linkin Park has introduced Emily Armstrong as its new vocalist, marking the band’s return after the death of Chester Bennington, seven years ago. The announcement comes just ahead of the group’s scheduled performance at The O2 Arena in London later this month, and a new album is reportedly in the works.

However, the excitement surrounding Armstrong's unveiling was tempered by online reactions to her past support for Danny Masterson, who was convicted for rape earlier this year. Mars Volta co-founder Cedric Bixler-Zavala condemned the choice of Armstrong in a public statement, raising concerns around her association with the convicted rapist and noting that his wife, Chrissie Carnell-Bixler, was one of Masterson's victims.

Bixler-Zavala expressed disappointment over the situation, questioning the ethics of welcoming a new vocalist who had publicly supported Masterson during the preliminary hearings of his trial. In his remarks, he referred to Armstrong’s support actions and the repercussions faced by victims in the Scientology context.

In response to the backlash, Armstrong addressed her past in a statement that did not mention Masterson directly. She acknowledged a misjudgment on her part, stating, "I went to one early hearing as an observer. Soon after, I realised I shouldn't have. I always try to see the good in people and I misjudged him." She clarified that she does not condone abuse or violence against women and expressed empathy for victims.

Linkin Park, established as one of the leading bands within the alt-metal genre, now faces a renewed examination from fans and critics alike, with many remarking either in support or opposition to Armstrong's remarks and the band's decision making. As the situation unfolds, it highlights the complexities artists navigate when personal and professional lives collide in the public eye. For further updates, check out Clash Music's news section.
