Japanese musician Hakushi Hasegawa has released their latest full-length album, Mahgakk, through Los Angeles-based electronic label Brainfeeder, making them the first Japanese artist to join the label. The album reflects Hasegawa's intricate approach to music that combines jazz piano, dense electronic programming, and unique vocal manipulations.

In a recent interview, Hasegawa shared insights about their approach to music. "Some people are digging deeper. Others are imitating the way others dig. Still others try to find a different spot entirely. What I want to do is question the shovel, and question the soil," they said. This sentiment underlines the experimental quality of Mahgakk, where Hasegawa pushes the boundaries of what music can express.

The album features diverse tracks, oscillating between intense rhythmic landscapes and moments of delicate melody. Producers might recognize the layered complexity in songs like "Departed" and "Mouth Flash (Kuchinohanabi)," where Hasegawa’s vocals are manipulated to explore extremes. The intent behind this manipulation is to challenge listeners’ perceptions of the voice as an instrument, with Hasegawa noting, "On this album, I try to expose people to things they would normally try to avoid— the discomfort of things."

Hasegawa's musical journey began with casual piano lessons that eventually transitioned into a profound passion for creating music. Their earlier releases gained traction within Japan's electronic scene, culminating in performances at significant festivals like Porter Robinson’s Secret Sky.

With Mahgakk, Hasegawa aims not only to reach a broader audience but also to assert their identity, having traditionally hidden behind illustrations and a mask. According to Hasegawa, revealing themselves was crucial, moving beyond an idealized projection that left them feeling dehumanized. By redefining how listeners engage with music and identity, Hasegawa is carving out a unique niche in the contemporary music landscape.

Mahgakk is now available for streaming and purchase on various platforms including Bandcamp.
