Jack Antonoff recently took to social media to clarify misconceptions regarding his actions during Katy Perry's performance at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), which took place on September 11. As Perry celebrated her receipt of the Video Vanguard Award, she treated the audience to a medley of her chart-topping hits and new material from her forthcoming album, '143', including standout tracks like 'E.T.', 'I Kissed A Girl', and her latest single, 'Lifelines'.

However, a moment during her performance sparked controversy when a segment of the audience observed Antonoff appearing to insert what many believed were Airpods into his ears while standing alongside Taylor Swift and actress Margaret Qualley. This quickly triggered a wave of backlash on social media, with one fan on Twitter expressing their disapproval, which led to a brief viral moment.

In response to the uproar, Antonoff clarified that the devices he used were not Airpods, but blue 'Hero' brand earplugs, designed to protect his hearing. He humorously acknowledged the awkwardness of relying on earplugs not only in loud concert environments but also while traveling and even sleeping, stating, "I do not only use them when in 100 plus DB environments... it is humiliating to admit."

Antonoff shared his gratitude for the attention this incident garnered, highlighting an important conversation regarding earplug use, which he humorously branded as embarrassing for his family.

This public incident comes on the heels of a busy summer for Antonoff, marked by a surprise appearance at Taylor Swift's concluding 'Eras' show in London and a collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter at the Grammy Museum. Meanwhile, Perry’s acceptance speech at the VMAs highlighted her successful career while also thanking her dedicated supporters, particularly her LGBTQ+ fans. Her anticipated album, '143', will be released on September 20, 2024, featuring the lead single, 'Woman's World'. Pre-order here.
