Johnny Marr, the guitarist of The Smiths, has issued a clear response to recent assertions made by his former bandmate, Morrissey, regarding a potential reunion tour and ownership of the band's trademark. In a social media post, Marr criticized Morrissey’s claims as incorrect, particularly pointing out the misconception that he had ignored a lucrative offer from AEG Presents for a reunion tour. Marr stated, "I didn't ignore the offer — I said no." He emphasized there are no plans for the band to tour with a different vocalist, countering any speculation surrounding that possibility.

Marr also addressed the allegations concerning trademark ownership. Previously, Morrissey had claimed Marr controlled the trademark rights to The Smiths. Marr clarified that he became aware that the band did not own its name after a third party attempted to use it in 2018. After contacting Morrissey’s representatives to collaborate on protecting the name, a lack of response led Marr to register the trademark himself. He later stated that Morrissey's lawyers agreed to the joint ownership of the trademark for both of their benefits. In a gesture of goodwill, Marr signed an assignment of joint ownership to Morrissey in January 2024, pending his signature.

Regarding a proposed greatest hits compilation celebrating The Smiths' 40th anniversary, Marr revealed he had rejected a suggestion for such a release due to the many existing compilations in the market, a point indirectly noted by Morrissey’s comments.

Marr’s efforts aim to protect the legacy of The Smiths amidst ongoing tensions. The former bandmates have not collaborated since their split, with discussions for a reunion in 2008 fizzling after a few days. While Marr begins a North American tour today (Sept. 17) in Denver with fellow Manchester band James, he remains committed to maintaining the integrity of The Smiths' name and legacy.
