Manchester newcomers Holly Head have unleashed their debut single, "No Gain," via Akoustik Anarkhy. This four-piece band, consisting of members Joe (vocals, guitar), Liam (bass), Oscar (drums), and Paddy (guitar), offers a unique take by blending elements of post-punk, dance, and Afrobeat, all while keeping an energetic and politically charged vibe.
The track draws heavily from frontman Joe's personal experience, particularly following his April 2023 arrest during a protest against the Scottish Grand National. As he awaited release in a police cell, Joe penned the initial drafts of the song, channeling his feelings of isolation and exhaustion. Notably, the lyrics express a blend of frustration towards societal issues, including a jab at the royal family.
Noel Vasquez, from Akoustik Anarkhy, praised Holly Head's fusion of 90's American Hardcore bands like Fugazi with the disco vibes of Donna Summer, highlighting the band's electrifying stage presence. The emotional and political weight behind "No Gain" epitomizes the band’s mission not only to innovate musically but to address pressing social causes such as the climate crisis, Palestinian liberation, and animal rights, influenced by the band members' personal struggles with neurodiversity.
Fans can catch Holly Head live at Akoustik Anarkhy Night at The Rat & Pigeon in Manchester on September 27. For more information about the band, follow them on Instagram at hollyhead.band. The single is available for download and streaming now.
