Chicago-based alt-rock band Provider has released their debut album, Automatic Thoughts, on August 10, 2024. The five-member group, formed in high school in Geneva, a suburb west of Chicago, has gained a long-standing friendship and camaraderie that they bring into their music. In a recent interview, band members shared their collaborative writing process, which reflects influences from iconic groups such as The Smashing Pumpkins, The Charlatans, and The Stone Roses. Provider features Cameron Cook (lead vocals/guitar), Brennen Morrell (lead guitar/synth), Joe Izzo (drums), Ryan Klaus (guitar/synth), and bassist Alex Zefron.

Their newly released single, Run Away, exemplifies their eclectic style, fusing indie rock, 80s and 90s alternative, and dream pop with atmospheric guitars and introspective lyrics. Zef describes their sound as one that evokes nostalgia while maintaining a fresh perspective. Each band member shared their favorite tracks from the album, revealing insights into their musical dynamics.

"In three words or less, describe the process of making your new album," prompted Liza Lentini, the writer of this feature. Responses varied from Cook’s "Facetime studio sessions" to Zef’s unique experience of writing their track Too Young to Die live without prior planning.

Despite coming from different musical backgrounds, all five members emphasized their chemistry and synergy as a key component of their sound. They noted that their lack of egos and a focus on what suits the song best make for a productive and enjoyable working dynamic.

Their roots in Chicago's music scene also influenced their craft, with references to local food, culture, and a commitment to collaboration within the community. Zef remarked, "The Chicago music scene is super inclusive, and people put each other on."
