Taylor Swift's endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential election has led to a remarkable spike in voter registration, according to reports from CNN's Elizabeth Wagmeister and Betsy Klein. After Swift's Instagram post on September 10, which included a link to Vote.gov following a presidential debate between Harris and Donald Trump, nearly half a million users rushed to register to vote. The post generated a record-breaking 405,999 visitors to the voter registration site, a stark rise from the usual 30,000 daily visitors.
Tom Bonier, a senior advisor at TargetSmart, noted that voter registrations surged by an unprecedented 9,000 to 10,000 individuals per hour post-publication. He estimated the overall increase in voter registration could be between 400% and 500%, asserting, "It's really unlike anything I've seen."
The endorsement has also drawn significant political reactions, with Donald Trump responding that Swift could face consequences for her public support of Harris, referring to her as "a very liberal person." This endorsement also marks a notable shift from Swift's previous support of Joe Biden during the 2020 election.
In addition, Swift has taken an active role in promoting informed voting, denouncing misinformation related to her political views, including misleading AI-generated images that falsely show her as endorsing Trump. Swift's political influence extended to her presence at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, where she won seven out of ten nominations, indicating her substantial reach beyond music into politics as the election approaches.
