The None, an emerging punk quartet hailing from London, has released their debut EP titled Matter on August 28, 2024. Each member of The None boasts an impressive musical pedigree, having played in notable bands such as Bloc Party, Blue Ruth, Cassels, Youth Man, and Frauds. Despite these affiliations, The None presents a sound that transcends their individual pasts, delivering a powerful and distinct musical identity.
Matter is a brief but intense 17-minute experience that encapsulates a brooding and aggressive noise rock aesthetic. The opening track, "Plow," sets the tone with an explosive surge of guitars, mimicking a cacophony that evokes a sense of chaos. This sound scape is punctuated by the visceral vocals of frontperson Kaila Whyte, who showcases an impressive vocal range from haunting melodies to ferocious shrieks.
The EP also features tracks such as "Railing," "Pigs Need Feeding," and the energetic conclusion, "Cheap Cloth Soon Frays." Each song exhibits The None's ability to deftly manipulate tempo and intensity, merging melodious hooks with a wall of overdriven sound. With influences drawn from iconic bands like Shellac, Jesus Lizard, and Unwound, their authenticity and lyrical aggression shine through.
In "Pigs Need Feeding," political undertones emerge as Whyte states, "They're selling warheads on my doorstep," demonstrating the group's commitment to thematic depth amidst the sonic onslaught. Matter is available for purchase on Bandcamp.
While the EP leaves listeners craving more, it stands as an impressive introduction to The None, solidifying their presence in the punk scene and leaving anticipation for future projects.
