The Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) has awarded its prestigious Gold Medal to composer Arvo Pärt, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the world of music. On September 12, RPS chair Angela Dixon and chief executive James Murphy traveled to Estonia, where they presented the award at the newly established Arvo Pärt Centre. This accolade coincides with the contemporaneous awarding of the same medal to composer Thomas Adès this month.

Michael Pärt, the son of Arvo Pärt, expressed his gratitude for the honor, stating, "Music is not just about sound, but a deep connection between the past and the present, between cultures and traditions, and between individual experiences." He noted that his father’s music draws rich inspiration from early musical traditions while innovatively blending them with contemporary styles.

Arvo Pärt is renowned for his distinctive tintinnabuli style, which Michael describes as a journey of creative and spiritual exploration. The composer’s work has been particularly influenced by English choir music, a tradition that holds significant importance in his compositions. The significance of vocal traditions is underscored by his collaborations with respected ensembles, most notably The Hilliard Ensemble and its founder, Paul Hillier.

The RPS Gold Medal boasts a storied history, having been first awarded in 1871, and it has recognized an array of distinguished musicians over the years, including iconic figures such as Brahms, Stravinsky, Britten, and more recently, artists like Jessye Norman and John Williams. The medal features the image of Beethoven, commemorating his association with the Society that commissioned his Ninth Symphony.
