Emily Armstrong, the newly appointed vocalist for Linkin Park, has publicly commented on her past support for convicted rapist and former actor Danny Masterson. This statement comes on the heels of significant backlash from fans and fellow artists alike, following Masterson’s sentencing to 30 years in prison last September for his involvement in multiple sexual assaults.

Armstrong had previously appeared outside a courthouse, rallying in support of Masterson during the early stages of his legal troubles. She, along with Masterson, is identified as a follower of Scientology, a connection that has drawn further scrutiny, especially from Cedric Bixler-Zavala of The Mars Volta, who had publicly criticized her prior support of Masterson. Bixler-Zavala’s wife, Chrissie, is among the women who accused Masterson of sexual assault, specifically incidents that reportedly took place between 2001 and 2003.

In her recent statement, Armstrong acknowledged her past actions, stating, "Several years ago, I was asked to support someone I considered a friend at a court appearance, and went to one early hearing as an observer. Soon after, I realized I shouldn't have. I always try to see the good in people, and I misjudged him." She later emphasized, "I do not condone abuse or violence against women, and I empathize with the victims of these crimes."

Despite her apology, Armstrong did not touch on her connections to Scientology, which continues to be a point of contention within the public and musical communities. Bixler-Zavala and Chrissie have been vocal about their criticisms, pointing out the conflict of having Armstrong in such a prominent role in Linkin Park while she is linked to a person convicted of significant sexual crimes. The reactions to Armstrong’s statement illustrate the ongoing challenges artists face when their personal beliefs and past actions clash with societal expectations and accountability.

As Armstrong steps into her role in Linkin Park, the band’s future dynamics and audience reception remain to be seen as they navigate this complex discourse around abuse and accountability in the arts.
