As 2024 unfolds, the screamo genre continues to thrive, with numerous noteworthy albums that showcase the depth and diversity of this often niche scene. As we enter the year's last quarter, Andrew Sacher highlights five essential albums that stand out so far.

1. State Faults - Children of the Moon (Deathwish Inc/Dog Knights)
State Faults has returned with Children of the Moon, potentially their most ambitious offering yet. This album sees the band expanding their sound, incorporating clean vocals and elements of post-rock and black metal alongside their signature intensity. With longer songs and greater musical variety, this release balances quality and quantity efficiently.

2. Respire - Hiraeth (Dine Alone)
Toronto's Respire mixes screamo with orchestral sounds, akin to Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Their album Hiraeth serves as a manifesto for the immigrant experience, merging intense instrumentation with an uplifting message of hope despite the dire themes it tackles.

3. Frail Body - Artificial Bouquet (Deathwish)
After a five-year hiatus, Frail Body has delivered Artificial Bouquet, leaning further into black metal influences. This album marks a significant evolution for the band, showcasing their ability to balance heaviness and beauty within their compositions.

4. Infant Island - Obsidian Wreath (Secret Voice)
With Obsidian Wreath, Infant Island presents their most refined work yet, combining screamo and atmospheric black metal. This album offers a rich tapestry of sounds, featuring guest appearances and climactic gang vocals, marking their continued ascent within the genre.

5. Massa Nera / Quiet Fear - Quatro Vientos // Cinco Soles (Persistent Vision)
This split album features contrasting styles, showcasing the heavier sound from Massa Nera paired with the theatricality of Quiet Fear. Their collaboration embodies a sense of community within the scene, aiming to bridge gaps and foster connections.

Both Frail Body and State Faults are set to support Pianos Become the Teeth's anniversary tour, with additional dates planned for State Faults on the East Coast prior to The Fest. Stay informed about their upcoming shows on BrooklynVegan.
