Indie-folk artist Flora Hibberd has announced her highly anticipated debut album, titled Swirl, set to release on January 17, 2025, via 22Twenty. Recorded during a sweltering summer in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the album delves into the complex and sometimes contradictory nature of language, examining the multiplicity of meanings words can carry for different individuals.
Alongside the album announcement, Hibberd released the lead single, Code, which showcases her distinctive sound. Describing its creation, Hibberd notes the song underwent several variations before settling into its final form. "We made this version late one night after driving to get burgers in a storm," she revealed. The track features lush production, intricate synths, and captivating vocals. Hibberd's innovative approach includes using a piece of plastic tubing as a sound source, which she sampled through a Casio keyboard.
The single comes with a striking video directed and edited by Roberto Cicogna, presenting a narrative of a character wandering through a town in search of a mysterious radio signal. This journey ultimately leads her to Hibberd and her band, intertwining the themes of discovery and connection.
